The No. 6 Brenham Cubs opened district play on Friday night with their shutout of the season.

Brenham scored 42 first-half points in its 48-0 shutout win over Waco (0-6, 0-1 district) at Waco ISD Stadium on Friday to begin District 10-5A-II play on a high note.

The Cubs (6-0, 1-0 district) scored 21 points in each of the first two quarters, beginning with a seven-yard touchdown run from sophomore CJ Glover with 6:46 left in the first quarter. Senior Cartelle Brown added the two-point conversion to push Brenham’s lead to eight points.

Brown finished the night with six catches and 90 receiving yards.

Glover began Brenham’s second drive by finding senior tight end Hagen Frank for a 69-yard touchdown pass. The ensuing conversion try was no good, keeping the Cubs’ lead at 14-0.

Following sophomore cornerback Rylan Lewis’ first career interception, senior quarterback Xyran Upshaw found the end zone from five yards out on the ground to push Brenham’s lead to 21-0. The rushing score was set up by a 32-yard pass from Upshaw to senior wide receiver Chris Guidry.

Guidry caught two touchdown passes of 22 and 51 yards in the second quarter. The touchdown catches highlighted a five-reception night with 139 yards. All five catches came in the first half.

Upshaw’s two passing touchdowns highlighted a season-best performance of 258 passing yards. He completed 14 of his 21 passes while running for 37 yards and a touchdown on six carries.

Glover added a 27-yard touchdown scamper in between Guidry’s touchdown catches for the second of his two rushing touchdowns. He finished the night with 107 yards on 21 carries, including 83 yards on 13 carries in the first half.

Brenham began the second half with an 11-minute, 25-second drive that ended in a 24-yard field goal for kicker Bleu Cienega to extend the Cubs’ lead to 45 points. He added another field goal with 2:30 left in the fourth quarter to cap Brenham’s scoring.

The Cubs finished with 539 offensive yards and crossed the 500-yard mark for the third straight game.

The Cubs’ defense limited Waco to just 55 offensive yards. The Lions completed just two of their 14 passes and threw two interceptions. Waco ran for 33 yards on 22 carries.

Brenham will travel to Bryan next week to take on Rudder at Merrill Green Stadium. Kickoff of the Oct. 17 matchup is set for 7 p.m.
