Selma City Schools Board of Education sign

Selma City Schools has returned Selma High and the alternative school to virtual classes for the rest of the week because of continued safety concerns.

In a message to parents, Superintendent Dr. Zickeyous Byrd said student safety is the district's top concern and they want to give local law enforcement time "to identify and apprehend those involved in last weekend's shootings and ongoing threats."

A student was shot on Friday night and the city reports a second student was shot over the weekend as part of continued violence.

Selma High, the alternative school and Selma Virtual Academy were put on virtual classes on Monday because of the weekend's shootings. Classes returned in person on Tuesday but the district was concerned about "ongoing events" and closed those campuses for virtual classes the rest of the week.

"This decision is being made out of an abundance of caution," Byrd said.
